Montana state Senator Dave Manning, 87, Hysham, the longest serving state lawmaker in the nation with more than 51 year' service, resigned from the Montana Legislature Firday because of poor health. Manning had been hospitalized since Jan. 8, the second day of the Montana legislative session, with several compressed vertebrae. Manning was first elected to the legislature in 1933. According to the Council of State Governments at Lexington, Ky., the next in line is state Rep. Solomon Blatt of South Carolina, who was sworn in eight days after Manning.
